sometimes I write professionally
with a dictionary near me
it takes me days feeling like I was still in 2nd grade
my thoughts jumbled up
fed up
having to read out loud
I should have been proud
1993
I duplicated me
I was her and she was me
I duplicated
me
the woman I always wanted to be
still afraid to be scene or is it seen
the scenery changed
better days
now not ahead
I don’t wait for what’s meant for me
it’s already mine

In a quiet town blanketed by winter’s first snow, Elara sat by her small window, a candle flickering beside her. The soft scent of sandalwood incense curled through the air, weaving comfort into the stillness. With her hands clasped, she whispered a prayer, steady though her heart ached. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God…”
For months, her world had unraveled. The life she had dreamed of felt like a distant memory, broken like fallen glass. She had built a life of independence from the wreckage, standing tall yet solitary, surrounded by beautiful things that no longer brought joy. Success was hers, but fulfillment was missing. Her soul longed for something deeper, something shared.
Though she couldn’t see it, divine timing was at work.
One cold evening, Elara felt a sudden pull to leave her home. Something deep within urged her forward, as though invisible hands were guiding her steps. She wrapped herself in her coat and walked into the snow-dusted streets, leaving behind the shadows of her past. Every step whispered: Let go… trust… move forward.
The streets stretched endlessly before her, winding like a labyrinth of doubt. Her breath hitched as uncertainty gnawed at her resolve. The world felt still, as though she were trapped in a story whose ending she couldn’t change. Old memories of control, dominance, and lost battles rose like ghosts, threatening to tighten their grip. But she pressed on, trusting that the unseen path would reveal itself.
At the edge of the woods, she came upon a forgotten chapel with its weathered doors slightly ajar. The air shifted, warm and protective, wrapping her like a familiar embrace. Inside, the scent of lavender and cedar greeted her like an old friend. She knelt at the worn altar, tears falling freely, surrendering the weight she had carried for far too long.
Reaching into her pocket, she found a small bottle of purple nail polish, a gift from her late grandmother. “Always paint your nails purple when you need to feel powerful,” her grandmother had once told her. Smiling through her tears, Elara carefully painted one nail, reclaiming a forgotten part of herself the part that believed in her own strength.
The air shimmered. A soft, radiant glow filled the chapel as though heaven itself had bent low to touch the earth. Elara felt something stir within her, something breaking free after years of silence. The chains that had bound her spirit dissolved, and for the first time in what felt like forever, she breathed deeply free, unburdened, and whole.
As dawn touched the frosted windows, Elara noticed something resting on the altar before her a small mustard seed wrapped in delicate cloth. It glowed faintly with promise, a symbol of new beginnings waiting to be nurtured. This was not the grand ending she had imagined, but rather a tender beginning, filled with hope, growth, and infinite possibility.
Pressing her hand over her heart, she whispered: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want…” and “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
Elara rose, lighter than she had felt in years. As she walked back through the snow-covered streets, she knew one thing for certain divine timing had always been working, even when she couldn’t see it. She was ready to plant new seeds, trust the journey, and believe once more.
Her story had only just begun.
Here’s the list of tarot cards that were symbolically represented in the story:
1. Ten of Cups Reversed – Symbolized by Elara’s shattered dreams and the loss of the life she thought she would have.
2. Nine of Pentacles – Represented by her independence and material success, though she felt lonely and unfulfilled.
3. Eight of Cups – Symbolized by her decision to leave behind her past and walk into the unknown, seeking something greater.
4. The Chariot Reversed – Represented by her feeling stuck, directionless, and unsure of her path forward.
5. The Emperor Reversed – Symbolized by memories of control, dominance, and past struggles with authority or self-discipline.
6. King of Wands Reversed – Reflected her doubts about past failures, leadership struggles, and lack of confidence in herself.
7. The Devil Reversed – Represented by the breaking of chains and release from spiritual, emotional, or psychological bondage.
8. Ace of Pentacles – Symbolized by the small seed on the altar, promising new beginnings, prosperity, and potential.
9. Page of Pentacles – Represented by the same seed, hinting at new opportunities, growth, and the start of a new journey.
The purple nail polish and a gift from heaven symbolized empowerment, spiritual support, and reclaiming personal strength, tying the story together with themes of hope, transformation, and renewal.
